Direct Services Coordinator/Counselor, Student Advocacy Resource Center

The Student Advocacy Resource Center at the University of Montana invites applications for a Direct Service Coordinator/Counselor to join their team. This position will provide direct clinical services to SARC clients which requires assessing needs and safety, generating and coordinating treatment plans, and providing trauma-informed advocacy and counseling services for survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence, discrimination, and harassment. Advocacy often involves assisting clients in navigating their service options, linking to medical care, coordinating with faculty to provide academic accommodations, providing emotional support through reporting processes, connecting them with therapy services, and empowering them to choose options that best serve their healing process. Individual counseling services are often time-limited (12 sessions).
This role may also include the development and facilitation of psychoeducational and support groups for clients. The individual in this position is responsible for managing clients from referring authorities (i.e. Title IX, Director of Residence Life, UM Police, First Step, faculty, etc.) and determining whether or not the needs of the student can be met through the SARC services. When a student’s needs outstrip the program’s services, this position serves as a liaison to local and regional providers. As a part of direct services, this position also provides on-call response to SARC’s 24hr support hotline and on-call advocacy to the area hospital (First Step program)/and or local police office for survivors of acute sexual assault and/or relationship violence. This on-call advocacy response is a shared responsibility between SARC and the local YWCA.
The Direct Service Coordinator/Counselor recruits, screens, and trains student volunteers and graduate student interns. This includes providing trauma-informed supervision, support, and direction for peer advocates and graduate student interns, such as scheduling and leading meetings, managing student office hours, overseeing graduate student caseloads and on-call shifts, and noticing signs of staff burnout. As a clinician and supervisor, this role is responsible for completing clinical documentation in a timely fashion and reviewing all graduate student clinical notes. Additionally, this health professional helps train interns and maintain SARC’s record-keeping system, which will be converting to Electronic Health Record (EHR). This role routinely reviews SARC’s materials, handouts, and training manuals to assess fidelity to best practices and updates as necessary though regular review of the literature pertinent to the social, psychological, and legal needs of our clientele. This position may at times also be responsible for updating and providing educational trainings on sexual/relationship violence, trauma, and discrimination to the campus community. As the direct service coordinator, you will also be responsible for maintaining cooperative and supportive relationships with our community partners at the YWCA, First Step, Crime Victim’s Advocate Office, Missoula Police Department and campus partners in the EOAA/Title IX Office, Residence Life, Student Conduct/Community Standards, Disability Student Services (DSS) offices, etc.
At times, this position will also assist with SARC outreach activities, including updates to SARC social media and website; assisting in the marketing and promotion of a program or organization by researching, writing, and/or selecting favorable publicity or educational materials for delivery; coordinating presentations or educational opportunities; hiring guest speakers; and/or providing other administrative support functions.
- Experience with personnel management and clinical supervision. Requires the ability to manage multiple schedules and coordinate office assignments for volunteers/ student interns
- Demonstrated skill working with sexual assault, stalking, and relationship violence survivors, as well as discrimination
- Complete MT approved advocacy training (or completion upon acceptance of position)
- Good public speaking skills and the ability to present relevant information via lectures to classes and campus/community groups
- Excellent interpersonal skills and crisis intervention skills
- Knowledge or the ability to gain knowledge of campus and community resources
- Ability to work with and lead a team
- Ability to maintain high standards of client confidentiality
- Knowledge and ability to understand and manage data and spreadsheets
- Excellent case management with attention to detail to assure compliance and prompt completion of referral requirements
- Demonstrated ability to learn and work with proprietary computer software programs
- Ability to work positively and supportively with diverse clients and provide high quality services to all
- Position is full-time, 0.75 FTE (with potential for work outside of these hours), MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
- Salary range for this position at a .75 FTE is $45,000 - $47,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Minimum Required Education & Experience
- The person assigned to this position should possess, at least at a minimum, a master's degree in a related field, as well as at least one (1) year of professional experience in a social services environment or a closely related position; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the competencies required to successfully discharge the duties assigned to this position. The person assigned to this position must have obtained or be in the process of working toward licensure.

- Experience working with clients in crises
- Familiar with professional literature on sexual assault and other discrimination on a college campus
